Martin Saints is a model from Brazil who head over to the “White City” to walk for Israeli designer and friend, Mauricio Pollacsek, at the second edition of Tel Aviv Fashion Week Spring 2013.

Fashion bloggers Dylan Paris, Megane Meimoun and Salome Alex went backstage at the glam show to catch up with Saints for a quick chin-wag.

How did it all begin?

The beginning of the beginning was a show I did for Mauricio Pollacsek at Sao Paulo Fashion Week for the Spring 2005 season. But I consider my modelling career to have started when I was in Milan, three years ago.

How do you know Mauricio?

I met him at the casting for the Spring 2005 collection, in Sao Paulo at his show room. Since then, Mauricio has become one of my best friends. We started to see each other all the time at shows and other occasions and naturally a friendship began to grow.

How did you break into modelling?

I won two contests in Brazil for Elite Model look, so it was already something knocking on my door. But before, I was involved in sports and other stuff, and then I had surgery on my knee and had to stop sports whilst I was undergoing physiotherapy. That’s the point when I started to take the modeling a little bit more seriously and when I realized that maybe it would be better for me than sports.

Tell us about the Armani editorial you featured in?

It was for a magazine in Ukraine called HELEN MARLEN, which is also a Russian magazine. These guys came to Milan (where I now live), searching for a male model to shoot for Armani and other brands. They picked me and I feature on the cover and editorial pages wearing the Armani Fall/Winter 2013-14 collection. It was great but basically it was an editorial, not a campaign.

What do you think about fashion?

I love it, I definitely love it. I’m also doing it for work, but the reason I’m in the industry is not only for the money, but also for the sense of achievement that I get from it.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as unique as possible. I like stuff that nobody else has and wearing things that nobody has seen -- I like exclusivity. I like to be the only one, so whatever I buy are usually unique pieces. And then people come and ask me where did I find it? And who made it? And I love it! I love to be exclusive!

What draws you to Tel Aviv?

I love Tel Aviv. I’ve already been here seven times. I know now that we are in the midst of this conflict situation but it doesn’t bother me at all. I think that we are very well protected and that there is no need to panic.

What are your plans for the future?

My future isn't yet decided, but I have some passions and interesting projects in the wings. I’m a songwriter, so I’m planning to record a demo of a few songs that I have written. I also studied acting in Milan at a very good American academy and have since done a few theater classes and some short movies, so acting is also on the agenda. My last role was in a short movie filmed in London. I don’t know what my future will be, but I’m just going with the flow and following the wind.

What is the meaning of life to you?

Life is something that no one should ever underestimate and we should always aim for everything that we want to achieve: to be happy. It doesn’t matter at what cost and what efforts. We have to sacrifice things in life if we really want to achieve. Sometimes it’s going to mean being far from your family, losing friendships along the way, or having relationships jeopardized because you made choices that didn’t allow you to be together. But I think it’s all worth it, because I believe that when you are in the moment,  it’s only that moment there, and that’s what you have to keep in mind when you are confronting your inner self.

Do you have any modelling tips to pass on?

Modelling is all about a little bit of luck, having a lot of persistence and also of course you need to be always well informed; you have to be connected to the people that are at the top of their game. You also have to be very flexible, very sociable, serious and absolutely responsible. And take it as it is -- a career. Some models are get into it and then say a lot of time: “I want to study... I just want this as a part time job” -- so you will be a part time worker like in other jobs. If you want to be the one, if you want to be successful, you need to put into it as much as you want to take from it.
